Why Does Our Taekwondo Program Focus So Much on the Basics?
The answer lies in a philosophy called Geungi (根技) — building a strong foundation of character before technique. Here is why we never rush the basics.
One of the most common questions parents ask us is: "My child is still young— why do they spend so much time practicing the same basic movements?"
It's a very natural question. The answer lies in the foundation of our curriculum— a philosophy called Geungi (根技).
What Is Geungi?
Simply put, it means building a strong foundation for your child
Geungi may sound like a complex martial arts term, but the idea behind it is very simple.
It focuses on helping children develop:
- Patience and self-control
- The ability to keep trying, even when something feels difficult
- A strong and steady foundation—both physically and emotionally
These are not just Taekwondo skills. They are life skills that support children in school, at home, and beyond.
Where Did Geungi Come From?

Geungi was developed by Kang Shin-chul, the great grand master of Namchang Dojang in Suwon, Korea.
Widely respected as a legendary figure in Taekwondo, Grand Master Kang Shin-chul dedicated his entire life to teaching with purpose and integrity. His legacy is not measured only by the techniques he taught, but by the generations of students whose lives were shaped through his guidance.
Geungi was born from this lifelong dedication— a philosophy built on the belief that true Taekwondo begins with character, not performance.
His teaching was guided by a simple yet powerful belief:
"Before teaching technique, we must teach attitude."
This philosophy is the root of our curriculum.
How This Philosophy Lives On in Our School

At Middleton U.S. Taekwondo, Geungi is not just a concept—it is something we practice every day.
Master Han, together with his daughter, Master Yujin Kang, has followed this Geungi philosophy through consistent training for over five years.
Master Yujin Kang has continued her poomsae training through regular Zoom-based sessions, demonstrating discipline, focus, and commitment. She is a former member of the Korean National Team and a World Champion, and she brings that elite experience into our program in a thoughtful, age-appropriate way for children.
What your child experiences in class today is the result of this long-term dedication to proper, values-based training.
We Teach the Child Before the Technique
That is why, before learning advanced kicks, children first learn:
- How to bow with respect
- How to line up and wait patiently
- How to listen until instructions are finished
- How to treat instructors and classmates with kindness
These may seem like small things, but they form the true beginning of Taekwondo.
This is where Geungi starts— by helping children build good habits and a calm, respectful attitude.
Geungi Education Has Two Important Parts
① Mind Training – Building Character
Through consistent practice, children naturally learn:
- Respect and courtesy
- Patience and emotional control
- Perseverance through challenge
- Confidence that comes from steady effort
They learn that mistakes are part of learning, that progress takes time, and that trying again matters.
② Body Training – Learning Through Strong Basics

Physically, we emphasize:
- Correct posture before speed
- Balance before power
- Understanding before memorizing movements
Rather than rushing through techniques, children learn why the basics matter.
These fundamentals grow naturally into:
- Poomsae (forms)
- Sparring
- Breaking
Strong basics make all advanced skills safer, smoother, and more enjoyable.
Why Repetition Matters
To adults, repetition can look boring. To children, repetition builds something essential:
- Focus
- Patience
- Emotional stability
- Confidence earned through effort
Geungi does not always show immediate results, but over time, parents often notice meaningful changes.
✔ Children who don't give up easily ✔ Children who stay calm under pressure ✔ Children who try again after making mistakes
Why We Never Rush the Basics
Some programs emphasize:
- Fast belt promotions
- Flashy techniques
- Quick results
We believe something different:
"Without a strong foundation, growth does not last."
That is why we choose a path that may look slower at first, but leads to stronger, more confident, and more resilient children.
The Greatest Gift Taekwondo Gives Your Child
Even if a child does not train forever, Geungi education leaves lasting benefits:
- Respectful behavior
- Emotional resilience
- A habit of discipline and effort
These qualities support children in school, at home, and throughout life.
Taekwondo is not just about learning how to kick. It is about helping children grow into balanced, grounded individuals.
In One Sentence
"Geungi education helps children build a strong inner foundation—so they can grow with confidence, resilience, and respect."
